I wanted a picture that showed the auction in action. In this photo, auction attendees raise their cards to signal their interest in buying the bunches of bananas. The woman in the blue shirt and the boy in the left corner of the photo, both holding bunches of bananas, were working at the auction. They would grab the produce from the back and then walk through the aisles and benches and distribute the goods to the customers.I selected this photo because it is multifaceted. It does a good job of showing the seriousness and focus that many of the auction attendees feel as they listen intently to what is being sold, its shows some of the products that are being sold, (stacked on the table), it shows the environment of the auction site, and finally it shows what typical Brumbach auction crowd looks like in terms of appearance. The back area of the auction room features this kitchen and take out food counter. The options are mostly fried foods and everyone at the auction seems to really enjoy the food. This fast food window is important because it allows for auction attendees to get a meal while they watch the auction and this is what transforms the auction into a social event. The cashier happily posed for me and then proceeded to make jokes after I took the photo.I choose to take this photo of Fred, a man from Milton who came to the Brumbach auction every Friday. After I introduced myself and politely asked to take a photo, Fred was extremely friendly to me and opened up. He told me that he came to the auctions religiously every Friday at about 3:00 pm, hung around, socialized with his buddies, got a good meal and enjoyed the scene. Although the sense of community at Brumbach was difficult to pinpoint at first, this photo of friendly Fred is an accurate representation of the kind people that return to the auctions every friday to spend time with familiar faces. This photograph is of a group of friends I met at the Brumbach auction. These ladies were just settling down and beginning their dinner when I took this photograph. They were meek and shy upon my request that I take a photograph of them, but gave me permission. I wanted the photograph to be candid and natural and to capture them in the motion of eating their dinner. These women are an accurate representation of what most of the women at the Brumbach auction looked like.
The Auctioneer was hilarious. There was an incredible sense of community. Here you see the auctioneer with a prosthetic leg. Joking, he asked “Did anyone lose a leg?” Once no one answered the auctioneer stated “Well we could bid on it.”
